Costoluto Genovese Tomato
The Costoluto Genovese has been grown since the 19th century. This tomato is deeply red and ribbed, and it has an intense tomato flavor.
Brandywine Tomato
Brandywine is a beloved American heirloom from the 1890s. I've read a lot about this tomato, and its origin has several sources. What's not in doubt is its beautiful beef steak quality. One slice can cover your entire hamburger. The original Brandywine was pink, but now it comes in red and other shades, all delicious.
This beautiful tomato was one that we sold earlier this year at our spring plant sale. Genuwine is a cross between the Genovese tomato and the Brandywine tomato. Looking at the tomatoes, I can see that the tomato starts with a blush, which deepens into a dark red. These were the first tomatoes other than cherry tomatoes that were ready in our garden. We harvested them and took them home before the rain started and before they cracked. Our favorite preparation for these delicious tomatoes is to dice them and add some salt, pepper, and olive oil. Then, take a good piece of crusty bread, toast it, rub garlic all over it, and top your toast with the tomato mixture. You will have an authentic bruschetta. Each fruit was 8 to 10 ounces.
